Abstract

Background: Subjective refraction is an optometric service process that requires not only technical competence but also communication competence. Patients' responses to instructions and questions from optometrists are important components in determining examination outcomes and eyeglass prescriptions. From a Human Resource Management perspective, communication competence represents a behavioral competency that supports effective job performance. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the relationship between optometrists' communication competence and eyeglass prescription accuracy during subjective refraction. Method: This quantitative study used an observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 50 adult patients undergoing subjective refraction at Optik Melawai Mall Kelapa Gading 2 in June 2026. Participants were selected using accidental sampling. Optometrist communication competence was measured using a 15-item Guttman-scale questionnaire, while eyeglass prescription accuracy was assessed using a 9-item observation checklist. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation after testing the normality assumption. Result and Discussion: The mean communication competence score was 12.06 (SD = 3.96), while the mean eyeglass prescription accuracy score was 6.16 (SD = 2.35). Pearson correlation analysis demonstrated a strong and statistically significant positive relationship between optometrist communication competence and eyeglass prescription accuracy (r = 0.740; p < 0.001). Conclusion: There was a strong and significant positive relationship between optometrist communication competence and eyeglass prescription accuracy during subjective refraction. These findings highlight the importance of developing communication competence as part of optometrist human resource management to support the quality of refraction services.
